Amnesty International is inviting applications for an 18-month, part-time Global Civic Space Fellowship dedicated to researching shrinking civic space and documenting grassroots resistance strategies worldwide.

This fellowship is designed to empower individuals passionate about human rights, advocacy, and civic engagement by providing them with an opportunity to conduct in-depth research and contribute to global discussions on resistance against authoritarianism.

This opportunity is ideal for human rights defenders, activists, researchers, journalists, academics, and policy professionals who have experience in civic space resistance and wish to contribute to Amnesty International’s advocacy efforts.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants should meet the following criteria:

  • Fluency in English (additional regional language skills are desirable).
  • Experience in civic space resistance through academia, NGOs, journalism, law, policy, or grassroots activism.
  • Strong research and writing skills, with experience in human rights publications.
  • No formal academic qualifications are required.
  • Must have legal authorization to work in their preferred location.
  • Open to applicants from all countries.

Program Details

  • Duration: 18 months (part-time engagement).
  • Location: Fully remote, no relocation provided.
  • Salary: Fixed rate of USD 25,000 for the entire fellowship.
  • Structure:
    • Research and analyze trends in civic space restrictions.
    • Develop concrete recommendations and practical tools for global civic space advocacy.
    • Publish blog posts, opinion pieces, and reports.
    • Organize virtual, in-person, or hybrid meetings with activists and thought leaders.
    • Deliver a final strategic think-piece to inform Amnesty International’s advocacy.

Application Process

To apply, candidates must submit:

  • A short bio (maximum one page) outlining relevant experience.
  • Case studies or descriptions of past work on civic space issues.
  • A proposed approach detailing research structure and engagement plans.

Payment Terms: Payments will be made by Amnesty International 30 days after receipt of a valid invoice upon completion of agreed milestones.
