The Humanity in Action Fellowship is an immersive and impactful program designed for students and recent graduates passionate about social justice, human rights, and civic engagement. Whether you are applying from the United States or Europe, this Fellowship provides a unique opportunity to study pressing societal challenges, develop meaningful solutions, and become part of a global network of change-makers. Application Process and Eligibility

There are two distinct application processes for applicants from Europe and the United States. Your eligibility and the available Fellowship programs depend on your location and citizenship status.

Who Should Apply?

We seek applicants who:

  • Are fluent in English (as all programs are conducted in English).
  • Are reflective and self-reflective, critical and self-critical, and willing to challenge their own preconceptions.
  • Are open-minded, humble, and ready to engage in meaningful and constructive dialogue.
  • Understand and appreciate the complexities of identities and perspectives in a global context.
  • Are willing to embrace discomfort as part of the learning process and respect others’ experiences and healing journeys.

Applying from Europe

Programs Available:

  • Amsterdam Fellowship (Netherlands)
  • Berlin Fellowship (Germany)
  • Copenhagen Fellowship (Denmark)
  • Sarajevo Fellowship (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Humanity in Action invites applications from individuals who are citizens or residents of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Denmark, Germany, Poland, or the Netherlands. If you reside in one of these countries or hold citizenship but live abroad, you must apply through the European application process.

Eligibility Criteria for European Applicants:

  • You speak English fluently (all programs are conducted in English).
  • You must fit one of the following criteria:
    • You are a current student at a college or university located in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Denmark, Germany, Poland, or the Netherlands.
    • You graduated no longer than two years ago from a college or university in any of the above-mentioned countries.
    • You grew up in, are a citizen, or are a resident of any of the above-mentioned countries and currently study at or recently graduated from a college or university anywhere in the world.
  • If your path has been non-linear or you feel unsure about your eligibility, please contact the relevant office to determine your eligibility.

Applicants may apply to multiple Fellowship programs through a single application and indicate their preferences. However, placement in a preferred program is not always guaranteed.

Applying from the United States

Programs Available:

  • Amsterdam Fellowship (Netherlands)
  • Berlin Fellowship (Germany)
  • Copenhagen Fellowship (Denmark)
  • Sarajevo Fellowship (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

If you are a student or recent graduate from or currently based in the United States, you must apply through the US application process. As a US-based applicant, you are eligible for the Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen, and Sarajevo Fellowships.

2025 Eligibility Requirements for Applicants from the United States

Applicants to the Humanity in Action Fellowship must be one of the following:

  • Currently enrolled undergraduate students from the US or at US-based colleges and universities (sophomores, juniors, and seniors); or
  • Recent graduates (for the 2025 Fellowship, we define recent graduates as individuals from the undergraduate or graduate classes of 2023 and 2024. For undergraduates, we define recent graduates as individuals who attended accredited, four-year undergraduate colleges or universities in the United States, having graduated in spring 2023 or later); or
  • Currently enrolled, second-year community college students who plan to continue their secondary education; or
  • Currently enrolled Masters and PhD students at US-based universities.

If you are a United States citizen studying at a foreign university, you are eligible to apply to the Humanity in Action Fellowship through the United States. If you are a United States student studying at a university in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, or Poland, you may also be eligible to apply through the Humanity in Action offices in those countries. Please contact those offices directly to confirm your eligibility.

If you are a non-US citizen studying at a university in the United States, you are eligible to apply to the Humanity in Action Fellowship through the US office.

If you are a student or recent graduate from and/or based in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, or Poland, you will need to apply through the European application process.
